What do most actors do when they are faced with a casting director and a cold reading?
When at 11:00 pm they find an email that they have a self tape due at noon tomorrow? When their manager says - I have a great audition for you - can you be there in an hour?
Many actors just memorize lines, practice their lines over and over, listen to their uninformed instincts and afterwards think, “If I’d just had more time.”
But for most actors - none of that works. Why?
- Most actors go up on their lines when they’re nervous.
- Just practicing your lines isn’t preparing to be in the scene.
- For many actors their pounding heartbeat is louder than their best instincts.
- And Telling yourself, “If I only had more time” doesn’t give you another shot. Casting does not want to hear it either.
You could always just do nothing. And what happens if you just keep doing what you’ve been doing? Eventually, you’ll succumb to those negative voices that tell you, “You can’t do cold readings.” and “ You’ll never make it.”
That was me before I created the Intentional Acting technique.
I had such debilitating nerves in casting sessions that I quit acting. Yep, that simple. I quit and went behind the camera.
Don’t even give me a script and put me in front of casting.
Last year I had a zoom commercial audition. I literally jumped out of the shower, threw on some clothes, and popped in front of my computer to zoom with two Casting Directors. I used the techniques I’m going to teach you and booked the job.
And on set, when the director wrapped me, the producers gave me a standing ovation!
